FAQs

The ‘My Rainbow Story’ Project is a new community project specifically developed to challenge and reverse the dominant texting and emailing culture and provide a 100% safe space for individuals to express their thoughts and stories through letter writing.

You can choose to write about ANYTHING (personal stories, feelings, secrets, opinions etc.) without worrying about how others might perceive or judge you. We all have, our own stories, our own experiences, journeys and ‘hidden secrets’, many of which we might be reluctant to share with others. We worry about so many things in life, and eventually we keep the feelings in us and try to digest it within ourselves, hoping that we could just ‘get over it’ and ‘move on’. Most of us know that whilst it’s easy to say ‘let’s be positive’, it’s darn hard to actually do it.

This project aims to provide a safe and positive space, and the reassurance that it is perfectly OKAY to say what we really think. We offer individuals the choice to express themselves anonymously. We hope to hear your ‘voice’, we ensure that your stories will be treated with respect, and feel that by speaking out, you will empower yourself, and your community to learn from past experiences.

The answer is YES. You are more than welcome to become a part of this meaningful project!

It is such a privilege to be able to read people’s real life stories and we truly believe that stories change lives in many ways. We will organise a community event every year where different stories from different people will be displayed for public reading. These events will be open to the public (free of charge), and your story will be given the opportunity to ‘speak’ to the wider community. The aim of doing this is to raise awareness in the society, helping others to appreciate their own journey through reading other people’s stories.

First of all, thank you very much for your kindness. There are a few ways in which you could support us to continue running this program.

Firstly, you could consider donating some money so that we could continue printing more promotional materials for this project and promote it to more communities across the whole Australia (especially those living in the rural areas).

Secondly, you may support this project through sharing your stories. This project is all about collecting people’s life stories. Your stories are precious and without that, this project would not be able to continue to survive! So, please write more letters, tell us more of your stories, and encourage your friends and family to tell us their stories too!

Thirdly, you could put in an expression of interest to become one of our project volunteers. We will be hosting events/activities/campaigns on and off throughout the year to raise awareness within the community and we definitely need some volunteers to help us at these events! Volunteering is also a wonderful way of meeting others, working together, building connections, and healing isolation. Please get in touch with us via the ‘contact’ page or you may send an email to MyRainbowStoryProject@gmail.com

Also, we are very open to any other assistance you feel you might be able to offer (e.g. editorial space, printing materials, venue positioning, t-shirts etc.)

Harbouring a grudge without letting it out can increase resentment and personal conflict. The expression “clearing the air” does exactly that. Once the feelings have been expressed, the person divulging their emotions feels a sense of relief and peace of mind. Expressing these emotions appropriately can be cathartic. Sometimes we might not be able to express these feeling with a trusted friend, or perhaps the costs of a professional therapist is a barrier; sometimes we have no one to tell our stories to. Our personal stories are vital to who we are. Sharing them can bring us strength. This project is free and it’s available to all individuals.

The answer is NO. Your letter doesn’t have to be anonymous. If you feel comfortable including your name/nickname, that’s perfectly fine! More power to you! The reason we recommend individuals to write an anonymous letter is because some people might want to express something that could be controversial to others and they might not want to be identified. We fully respect this. We believe in freedom of speech and there is absolutely nothing wrong with having and/or sharing our opinions, in fact, owning your story can bring you, and others, a deeper sense of self.

YES, you can. We would encourage you to express whatever you have within you, in whatever form. Please do not be afraid to let it out. The only thing we would like to suggest to you is to keep your letter anonymous so that no one knows who you are.
